The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Maharashtra’s Thane and Raigad districts and parts of Mumbai from April 27-29.

On Wednesday, IMD scientist Sushma Nair was quoted by PTI as saying that there is an anti-cyclonic circulation over Thane, Raigad and parts of Mumbai which will lead to an increase in temperature.

The temperatures are likely to peak on April 27 and 28. This is the second heatwave alert issued for Mumbai and neighbouring regions this month. On April 15 and 16, Mumbai and its neighbouring areas had witnessed severe hot weather and temperatures in parts of Navi Mumbai reached 41 degrees Celsius.

The weather agency on Tuesday said that the heatwave is likely to continue over most of east India and spread to southern India as well.

The IMD predicted ‘heatwave to severe heatwave’ conditions in eastern India and southern peninsular India over the next five days.

These conditions are expected to prevail in parts of West Bengal, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Sikkim, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.

Meanwhile, several parts of Delhi witnessed a sudden change in weather with light to moderate rainfall on Tuesday evening. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, Delhi-NCR (Dadri, Greater Noida) and adjoining areas including Ghaziabad also witnessed moderate-intensity rain with gusty winds.

As many as 15 flights were diverted at the Delhi airport on Tuesday evening due to bad weather in the national capital. Many flights were also reported to be delayed.
