Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed authorities to ensure connectivity is restored at the earliest and all assistance is provided to those affected due to incessant rain

Heavy rainfall led to a flood-like situation and landslides in Assam’s Dima Hasao district, snapping road and rail communication at several places in the hill district. The entire Barak Valley was also cut off from rail connectivity due to severe waterlogging in many areas.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed authorities to ensure connectivity is restored at the earliest and all assistance is provided to those affected due to incessant rain.

“Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma is monitoring the flooding & landslides caused by heavy rainfall in Dima Hasao and Barak Valley. CM has directed authorities to ensure connectivity is restored at the earliest and all assistance is provided to those affected,” the Chief Minister’s Office said in a tweet.

Incessant rain led also to waterlogging in several areas of the district, including Haflong Town. Schools have been closed in Haflong and people advised to avoid unnecessary travel by local authorities.

Railway services have also been disrupted between Jatinga-Lampur and New Harangajao due to landslides. According to Sabyasachi De, CPRO of Northeast Frontier Railway, in some parts, water and mud overflowed on the railway track.

“Now the clearing process is underway. There is no report of any railway track damage. We are on alert,” Sabyasachi De said.

Relentless downpour since Wednesday night, accompanied by landslides and floods, have affected normal life in various parts of the district, officials said. The Dima Hasao District Disaster Management Authority has issued an advisory, urging people to refrain from avoidable travel till May 4.

Communication along the Haflong-Silchar road has been severely hampered, as a section between Harangajao and Miyungkhro was washed away, leaving numerous vehicles stranded on both ends, the officials said.

Several places in Ramnagar area of Haflong have been inundated by water from an overflowing lake, they said.

Moreover, one person was killed and six others injured– all candidates of a recruitment exam of a Tripura bank– when their bus overturned due to heavy rain in Dima Hasao.

According to reports, the accident occurred in the wee hours of Thursday due to heavy rain, causing the bus to overturn and collide with a road divider, ultimately plunging into a drain.

According to officials, the bus from Agartala carrying around 40 candidates for the recruitment exam of Tripura State Cooperative Bank (TSCB) going to Guwahati overturned at Ditokcherra in mountainous Dima Hasao district killing one of the candidates Deepraj Debbarma (27) on the spot and injuring six others.

The Chief Minister has expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased of the accident.

“While wishing a speedy recovery to those injured, CM has directed the best possible medical attention is provided,” the CMO said.
