Several states across the country experienced extreme heat conditions on Sunday, with temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions were recorded in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Jharkhand, with maximum temperatures reaching 4-7 degrees Celsius above normal.
Meanwhile, the national capital also saw its hottest day of the year, with a maximum temperature of 41.1 degrees Celsius, which was two notches above normal.
“Heatwave to severe heat wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets over interior Karnataka during the May 5 to May 7, West Rajasthan during May 7 to May 9, over eastern parts of Rajasthan and western regions of Madhya Pradesh on May 8t and May 9 and over Saurashtra during May 6 to May 9,” the weather department said.
Additionally, an orange alert for heatwave has been issued in most of the Karnataka districts where Lok Sabha constituencies are going to polls on Tuesday. Temperatures have soared to 42 to 44 degrees Celsius in the past few days.
Despite the extreme weather, the forecaster has predicted some relief from the scorching conditions in several states in east and parts of southern peninsular India this week.
“In April and May, we expect moderate thunderstorm activity and hail over northeast India. Now the extreme heat over east and south India will decrease. We expect thunderstorm activity for five days,” stated IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
Light to moderate rainfall prediction
The weather department has also forecast rain in several regions, including the northeastern states, West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha.
“Fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied with isolated thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during next 7 days,” according to the IMD.
Heavy isolated rainfall are likely over Arunachal Pradesh on Monday, followed by Assam and Meghalaya on the Tuesday, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till May 7. Further, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Assam and Meghalaya on May 6.
