Teachers are an important aspect of a child’s life as they have the power to shape their personalities and teach them. Every student has a favourite teacher, either because of the way they taught, or encouraged them. Similar is the case with a retired IAS officer in Tamil Nadu, who still remembers his late teacher, who played an important role in his life. Despite the death of his teacher, his fondness for his family has not diminished.

Respected and retired IAS officer, Balachandran currently resides in Bengaluru. He has been engaged in various social services and voiced his views on various social welfare issues on social media and television. He is fond of the Tamil language and well-versed in its literature as well. His Tamil teacher, Mr Ramasamy, was an important part of his childhood and credits him for making him a respected person in society. The teacher passed away seven years ago.

But, the death of the teacher did not weaken his bond. His late teacher’s wife, Pattu and grandson Saravanan reside in Nemam village in Thiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu. Whenever Balachandran visits Thanjavur, he makes it a point to meet his teacher’s 80-year-old wife and seek her blessings by touching her feet. But that’s not all.

In his recent visit to Thanjavur, Balachandran was in Nemam village visiting the teacher’s family. It was during his stay he figured out that Pattu was suffering from old-age illnesses and was not able to afford to buy medicines for herself. He quickly intervened and bought the necessary medicines for the old woman and handed them over to her grandson Saravanan. He also handed over Rs 45,000 cash to buy a cow and manage the income by selling its milk. He also advised the grandson to not cut down on the medicine doses and to take care of Pattu.

In an interview, the proud Pattu shared, “Though you are not born from me, stand with me as my eldest son and wipe our tears”, as she burst out in tears of happiness. Seeing Balachandran’s kind act, the people around Pattu’s area were moved by the gesture. They were shocked that the retired IAS officer kept in touch with the teacher who taught him decades ago and is helping to take care of them just like an elder son.
